Meetings Scheduled to Discuss School Renovation Plan

A series of meetings have been scheduled to get input from residents about upcoming elementary school building  renovation projects.

The town is formulating phase two of a multi-year process designed to ensure that all elementary students are educated in facilities equipped for 21st Century learning while making sure that buildings are equitable and racially balanced.

A town-appointed committee, SMARTR2, presented three plans and a recommendation to the Board of Directors and Board of Education.  Members of the Boards want to get residents’ thoughts on these plans and have repeatedly emphasized that they are open to other ideas and proposals. That committee has also been charged by the Boards with preliminary planning for the repurposing of Nathan Hale, Washington, and Robertson.

Phase one of the work included renovation of Waddell Elementary, which reopened this year, and work now under way at Verplanck Elementary, which is scheduled to reopen in Fall 2019.

There is more information about the SMARTR2 work on the district website at www.MPSPride.org.
