Equity Informed School Climate Assessment
For the past two years, students, staff and families have been evaluating the culture and climate of the school district through the lens of racial equity and on this page are the results of this crucially important ‘Equity-Informed School Climate Assessment’ work.
While we have known for some time that there are institutional and systemic inequities that prevent all students from reaping the same social and educational benefits, EISCA provides us with information – thanks largely to input from marginalized groups sharing their experiences – for continued progress and improvement.
We believe strongly that when those with the most marginalized identities are served well, the school district creates a healthier learning environment for everyone. The EISCA report revealed that there are many great, inclusive, positive dimensions to our diverse district but we also know there is much more to be done.
Some of the data and stories in the EISCA report may be difficult to read, believe and/or accept. Please use the following suggestions to guide you as you engage with the report:
- Lean into discomfort and develop a growth mindset: sometimes we need to encounter discomforting truths in order to learn and improve
- Don’t take it personally: this report is about the district as a whole, not about individuals
- Notice your reactions and engage in self-reflection: if you feel defensive: pause, notice your reaction, and ask yourself, why?
Questions to ask yourself:
1. What information was familiar/surprising to me?
2. How does this information make me feel? Why does it make me feel this way?
3. What have I personally experienced or witnessed that is similar/different from this information?
4. Why have my experiences been similar/different?
5. What will I do differently now that I have this information?
