Mrs. Gatmaitan's Class Base-Bowl Food Drive Commercial
Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade 2016
The K-2 classes read the book "Balloons Over Broadway" by Melissa Sweet. The students learned about the famous puppeteer Tony Sarg and how the Macy's Day parade began.
When Tony was a young boy his father asked him to feed the chickens each morning. Tony didn't like going out in the cold, so he invented a pulley system that would allow him to feed the chickens from his bed. This young inventor became an adult that used marionettes in the Macy's department store windows. One day Mr. Macy came to him and told him many of his employees from other countries were homesick. He asked Mr. Sarg to help him design a parade where people could celebrate their cultures. Mr Sarg used his knowledge of puppets to make balloons that could float and be held from the bottom instead of the top like a puppet.
